Mentor-Protégé Program
The Mentor-Protégé Program provides incentives to the prime contractor to assist small business in acquiring the corporate skills necessary to perfect their unique business talents which will allow them to become more competitive in the marketplace. Another benefit of the program is that the mentor and protégé are encouraged to partner with Historically Black Colleges & Universities and other Minority Institutions to capitalize on government opportunities found in the following business fields: research and development, technology transfer, and training. Battelle participates in many Mentor-Protégé Programs, including the one created by the Department of Defense.
The OSD is responsible for managing and facilitating Mentor-Protégé Agreements. The OSD supports programs managers by identifying protégé firms and HBCU’s/MI’s. In addition, the OSD assists Program Manager’s with the preparation of a Mentor-Protégé Application, reporting requirements and monitoring of goals and objectives.
SBIR/STTR
Encouraging small business owners to explore opportunities in unlocking their technological potential is a key element in Battelle's success as a global research leader. Energized with commitment, Battelle finds teaming opportunities with small business that want to work on government Research and Development (R&D) projects. Currently, the Department of Defense SBIR/STTR program earmarks over $1 billion of its R&D budget for competition among small technically savvy companies. These research dollars are just for small business firms and they are made available through entrance into the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.
Other small business programs that expand funding opportunities in the innovative research sector are the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. This program also embraces the contribution of small business by reserving a specific percentage of federal R&D funding for award to small businesses and non-profit research institutions such as Battelle.
