BATTELLE AND THE NATIONAL LABS IT MANAGES OR CO-MANAGES WIN 11 R&D 100 AWARDS
Columbus, Ohio-A safety barrier for NASCAR tracks is among the 11 Battelle-related technologies that have earned R&D 100 Awards from R&D Magazine. R&D Magazine presents the awards annually to honor the year's most significant scientific and technological innovations. Battelle won three awards this year, and shared another with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The other national laboratories that Battelle manages or co-manages for the U.S. Department of Energy won seven awards. Oak Ridge National Laboratory won three, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory won two, and Brookhaven National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory each won one. "These awards are a reflection of the creativity and hard work of the researchers involved," said Battelle President and CEO Carl F. Kohrt. "I am extremely proud of their work and the important contributions being made across Battelle and the national labs that we manage or co-manage." Battelle and the labs it manages or co-manages have received 141 of the awards since 1969. The 2005 winners will be recognized at a ceremony later this year. Details on the technologies that won awards from the national laboratories are available by contacting the public affairs offices of those labs. The Battelle awards were for the following innovations: Reusable Abutment Cushion Extension (RACETM) Safety Barrier (joint entry with C.U.E. Incorporated) This barrier, soon to be installed on some NASCAR tracks, is designed to reduce injuries and fatalities during crashes while also being completely reusable and self-restoring. The unique material absorbs tremendous amounts of energy at impact, but then returns to its pre-impact shape. Pipeline Inspection Device (Mechanical Damage Inspection Pig Using Dual Field Magnetic Flux Leakage) This product augments routine corrosion inspection of pipelines through a new system that uses a second magnetic field. This allows the device to detect and assess mechanical damage in pipelines that otherwise is difficult to diagnose. WastAway Municipal Solid Waste Recycling System (joint entry with Bouldin Corp.) The system allows the recycling of unsorted municipal solid waste into safe, usable products. A patented process converts the waste to a material that resembles mulch, with applications that include soil amendment for erosion control and revegetation of barren land and growing material for nurseries and greenhouses. The Morning Report: Advanced Proactive Safety and System Monitoring (collaborative project with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Battelle Columbus; joint entry with NASA Ames Research Center, Flight Safety Consultants, ProWorks Corporation, and Safe Flight) The Morning Report collects and analyzes daily on-board aircraft flight information and presents data the next morning. This allows safety inspectors to rapidly pinpoint anomalies, share information with other decision makers, and possibly prevent accidents. Continuous analysis of flight data can be used by aviation safety experts and airline policy makers to determine subtle but serious safety issues. Battelle is a global leader in science and technology. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, it develops and commercializes technology and manages laboratories for customers. Battelle, with the national labs it manages or co-manages, oversees 19,000 staff members and conducts $2.9 billion in annual research and development. Battelle innovations include the development of the office copier machine (Xerox), pioneering work on compact disc technology, medical technology advancements, and fiber optic technologies.
