BATTELLE AND THE NATIONAL LABS IT MANAGES OR CO-MANAGES WIN 17 R&D 100 AWARDS

Columbus, OH--Battelle and the national laboratories it manages or co-manages for the U.S. Department of Energy won 17 R&D 100 Awards in this year's edition of the "Oscars of Innovation."

R&D Magazine presents the awards annually to honor the year's most significant scientific and technological innovations. Battelle won an award for the weld prediction technology known as VerityTM, while the national laboratories Battelle manages or co-manages for DOE won 16 awards for technologies dealing with everything from nanoscience to energy to advanced materials. Oak Ridge National Laboratory won six awards, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory won five, Idaho National Laboratory won four, and Brookhaven National Laboratory won one.

The 17 total awards is a record for Battelle and increases the total number of R&D 100 Awards for Battelle and the national labs it manages or co-manages to 158. The magazine has been presenting the awards since 1969.

"This is a tremendous achievement for our researchers across the Battelle family," said Battelle President and CEO Carl F. Kohrt. "The R&D 100 Awards celebrate the best and brightest in the world of science and technology, and that is exactly what we strive to be at Battelle."

VerityTM far surpasses any existing modeling method, so that fatigue lives of welded structures now can be reliably predicted regardless of the complexity of welded components and modeling details. The breakthrough could revolutionize design, engineering and manufacturing processes and has the potential to save billions of dollars in the aerospace, automotive, bridge construction, shipbuilding, pipeline, and off-shore oil rig industries.

Pingsha Dong, the inventor of VerityTM, and the other R&D 100 Award winners will be honored at a ceremony later this year.

Details on the technologies that won awards from the national laboratories are available by contacting the public affairs offices of those labs.
