Battelle was established as a charitable trust as a result of Gordon Battelle’s will in 1929 as a memorial to his family who were early leaders in the American steel industry.  Gordon Battelle envisioned an organization which could solve significant industrial and societal problems, advance our competitiveness, and give back to the community.  To fulfill his will, Battelle is dedicated to improving the quality of life in the communities where our employees and customers live and work. We do this through three distinct activities: (1) targeted philanthropy with an emphasis on education; (2) volunteerism; and (3) job creation and economic development.

Helping the Community, Supporting Education

We distribute at least one-fifth of our net operating income each year to civic, arts, health and human services, and educational needs. About two-thirds of our philanthropic dollars are earmarked for education projects from early childhood through college, especially in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) areas. In addition to financial support, we collaborate with organizations across the country to share our expertise and develop education-related initiatives that are replicable and sustainable.

Team Battelle: A Way to Give Back

Over half of our staff members in Columbus volunteer through our Team Battelle volunteers program and donate more than 10,000 hours annually to support over 40 projects that align with our corporate citizenship priorities. Hundreds of Battelle staff also serve on non-profit boards and steering committees and participate as peer mentors, science fair judges and advisory panel members. It’s a significant part of who we are and what we do.

Job Creation and Economic Development

At Battelle, we take enlightened organizational citizenship to a level that includes, but also transcends, charitable giving and volunteerism. Through Battelle Ventures, we translate science and technology into new businesses and employment growth. And, through alliances with local and regional development consortia as well as colleges and universities, we help bring new economic vitality to the cities and the regions we call home.
