Challenge

Orthopedic surgeons are required to wear a variety of personal protective equipment (PPE) including a face shield, gown, and gloves during all surgical procedures to protect themselves and the patient from debris, body fluids, and particulate materials or aerosols generated during procedures. These layers of fabric end up trapping excess CO2, sweat, and heat within the garments of the surgeon, leading to fogging of the visor, discomfort, and hindered surgical performance during procedures. 

The Solution

  • The Surgical Helmet System is an ancillary medical device used in conjunction with a protective hood during surgical procedures.
  • The helmet system provides protection for surgical staff from infectious body fluids and filtrates potentially infectious aerosols and materials generated by power tools during orthopedic procedures.
  • The helmet is comprised of a venting system to keep the surgeon cool and dry during long procedures and an adjustable surgical lamp that ensures full visibility tailored to the surgeons preference.

The Outcome

The product was approved by the FDA for commercial launch and 12 patents were granted around the final design.
